Upper-Intermediate - Punctuation Issues (D2177)

Kevin, wǒ yào xiě yī fēng Yīngwén yóujiàn gěi kèhù. nǐ néng bu néng bāng wǒ jiǎnchá yīxià, kàn kan yǒumeiyǒu wèntí?
Kevin, I want to write an English letter to a client. Can you help me look over it and see if there are any problems?
dāngrán kěyǐ. wǒ lái kàn kan. ng4, nèiróng méi shénme wèntí. bùguò, nǐ biāodiǎn diǎn de yǒuxiē wèntí ya.
Of course I can. Let me see. Yeah, there's no problem with the content. However, there are some mistakes with your punctuation.
hēi, zhèxiē wǒ dōu gǎo bu qīngchu, shéi ràng wǒ yīngyǔ yǔfǎkè dōu zài shuìjiào ne! nǐ bāng wǒ gǎigai ba.
Yeah, I'm not clear at all on this stuff. That's what I get for sleeping through English grammar class. Maybe you should help me change it.
shǒuxiān suǒyǒu de biāodiǎn fúhào zhīqián dōu bùyòng kònggé, dànshì zhīhòu dōuyào yǒu yī gè kònggé, ránhòu cáinéng zài xiě nèiróng.
First of all, before all of the punctuation marks, you don't need to have a space. However, you have to have a space after them. Only then can you begin to write again.
Oh no! I'm going to have make lots of changes. Let me write this down.
yī kāitóu jiù cuò le." Dear Mr. Wang” de hòumian yīnggāi yào jiā dòuhào.
The greeting is wrong. After “Dear Mr. Wang” there should be a comma.
Zhōngwén lǐ yīnggāi shì màohào ya.
In Chinese there should be a colon.
除非是很正式的,比如“To Whom It May Concern要用冒号,其余都应该是逗号。还有,这些逗号也不对,应该用句号。
zhè shì Yīngwén a, xiǎojie! chúfēi shì hěn zhèngshì de, bǐrú" To Whom It May Concern yào yòng màohào, qíyú dōu yīnggāi shì dòuhào. háiyǒu, zhèxiē dòuhào yě bù duì, yīnggāi yòng jùhào.
This is English, Missy! Unless it's really formal, like “To Whom It May Concern”, you need to use a colon, otherwise you should always use a comma. Also these commas are incorrect. You should use periods.
kěshì zhè jù huà hái méiyǒu jiéshù ya.
But this sentence hasn't finished yet!
Zhōngwén lǐ, rúguǒ liǎng gè duǎnjù yǒu guānlián dehuà, dāngzhōng kěyǐ yòng dòuhào. dànshì zài yīngyǔ lǐ, rúguǒ zhǔ wèi bīn qíquán, nà jiùshì yī gè wánzhěng de jùzi le. jiù yīnggāi yòng jùhào.
In Chinese, if two short sentences are related, you can place a comma between them. However, in English, if you have a subject, verb and object together, then it's a complete sentence. So you should use a period.
yuánláirúcǐ.
So that's how it is.
lìngwài, shūmínghào hé dùnhào yě shì Zhōngguó tèyǒu de biāodiǎn fúhào, yīngyǔ zhōng gēnběn bù cúnzài.
Also, title marks and serial commas are special Chinese punctuation marks. They simply don't exist in English.
nà yào xiě shūmíng zěnme bàn?
Then if you want to write the name of a book, what do you do?
yībān yòng xiétǐ huò zhě cūtǐ jiù kěyǐ le. zhìyú dùnhào yībān dōu shì dòuhào.
Using italics or bold is usually okay. As for serial commas, we just use regular commas.
hǎo, wǒ gǎi yīxià.
Okay. I'll make the changes.
nǐ wèishénme xiě liǎng biàn shěnglüèhào?
Why did you write two ellipses?
A: 没有啊。
méiyǒu a. shěnglüèhào bù jiù shì liù gè diǎn ma?
I didn't. Isn't an ellipsis six dots?
bù duì, yīngyǔ de shěnglüèhào shì sān gè diǎn, érqiě zài háng dǐ, bùshì háng zhōng. háiyǒu, jùhào hé dòuhào bìxū zhìyú yǐnhào zhīnèi; màohào hé fēnhào bìxū zhìyú yǐnhào zhīwài……
No. An English ellipsis is three dots, and it goes at the bottom of the line, not in the middle. Also, periods and commas have to be placed inside of quotation marks; colons and semicolons have to be placed outside of quotation marks...
āyā, wǒ yī gè tóu liǎng gè dà le!
Jeez! I'm so confused!
