Upper-Intermediate - Legalize It? (D2084)

wǒ kàndào yǒu ge Měiguó péngyou zài Facebook shàng xiě: wǒ xīwàng dàmá héfǎhuà. zhè yě tài kěpà le, Měiguó rén dàodǐ zěnme xiǎng de a?
I've seen some of my American friends write on Facebook: I hope that marijuana is legalized. This is really scary. What are Americans thinking?
zhè ge hěn zhèngcháng a, xiànzài zhīchí dàmá héfǎhuà de shēngyīn hěn gāo.
This is really quite common! Nowadays there is a lot of support for the legalization of marijuana.
kěshì dàmá shì dúpǐn a! Měiguó bù yě měinián huā hěn duō qián hé jīnglì qù jīdú ma?
But marijuana is a drug! Doesn't America also spend lots of money and effort every year to bust drug dealers?
zhè ge háishì yǒu qūbié de. dàmá suànbusuàn dúpǐn háishì ge yǒu zhēngyì de wèntí.
There's still a difference here. Whether or not marijuana should be considered a drug is still a controversial question.
ǎ, yǒu shénme qūbié?
Oh? What's the difference?
dàmá suīrán yě huì chǎnshēng huànjué、 kuàigǎn, dànshì yīlài xìng méi hǎiluòyīn、 bīngdú nàme qiáng. jiùsuàn shàngyǐn yě kěyǐ hěnkuài jièdiào. érqiě duì shēntǐ de shānghài yě bù dà.
Although marijuana can cause hallucinations and make people high, it doesn't create dependencies as strong as heroin or crystal meth. Even if you are addicted, you can quit easily. Also, it's not so harmful to the body.
kěshì háishì yǒu shānghài de a. rúguǒ héfǎ, wànyī dàjiā lànyòng zěnme bàn?
But it's still harmful! If it were legal and everyone abused it, what then?
qíshí suīrán xiànzài shì fēifǎ de, dànshì zài Měiguó, xī dàmá de rén bìngbù shǎo, tèbié shì qīngshàonián. Àobāmǎ hái gōngkāi chéngrèn tā xī guò ne. háiyǒu, xiàng zài Hélán de mǒuxiē dìfang xī dàmá yǐjīng shì héfǎ de le, kěshì nàlǐ yě méiyǒu dàmá fànlàn a.
In fact, although it's illegal, many people in America smoke marijuana, especially young people. Even Obama has publicly admitted that he's smoked it. Also, in some places like The Netherlands smoking marijuana is already legal, but these places haven't been flooded with marijuana.
fǎnzhèng wǒ háishì juéde zhè ge dōngxi bùnéng pèng.
Anyway, I still feel that this shouldn't happen.
suǒyǐ, yě bù shì suǒyǒu de rén dōu zànchéng. yǒuyīxiē zhōu yǐjīng yǔnxǔ zài yīliáo shàng shǐyòng dàmá, ér yǒuyīxiē zhōu háishì yángé jìnzhǐ de.
So, not everyone agrees on this. Some states already allow the use of marijuana in medical treatment, and some states still strictly forbid it.
nà nǐ zěnme xiǎng de ne?
What do you think?
wǒ zhè ge rén zuì kāimíng le. zhè ge jiù xiàng xīyān, suīrán yǒuhài jiànkāng, kě nà shì gèrénxuǎnzé.
I'm pretty open. This is like smoking cigarettes. It's harmful to your health, but it's a personal choice.
nà yàoshì nǐ de háizi yào xī dàmá, nǐ yě zànchéng?
Then if your child smoked marijuana, would you approve of it?
ǎ, nà kě jiānjué bù yǔnxǔ.
Oh,I wouldn't allow that at all.
