Upper-Intermediate - Beware of Professional Beggars (D2062)

kuài zǒu, kuài zǒu!
Quick, quick!
āi, zěnmele.
Jeez, what is it?
nǐ méi kànjiàn nàbiān yǒu jǐ ge qǐgài ma?
Didn't you see that there were some beggars over there?
qǐgài yòu bù kěpà, wèishénme yào zǒu? érqiě qǐgài nàme kělián, yīnggāi yào bāngzhù tāmen ya.
Beggars are nothing to be afraid of, why do we need to go? Besides, beggars are really unfortunate, we should help them.
āyā, nǐ gāng lái Zhōngguó bù zhīdào. zhèxiē rén dōu shì zhíyè qǐgài, nǐ kàn tā kělián, tā zhuàn de kě bǐ nǐ duō duō le ne.
Man, you just came to China so you don't know. These people are all professional beggars. You think he looks down and out, but he earns way more than you do!
ǎ?" zhíyè qǐgài”?
What? Professional beggars?
shì a, tāmen yǐ qǐtǎo wéi zhíyè. yòu bù shì méiyǒu láodòng nénglì, zhǐshì lìyòng biérén de tóngqíngxīn zhuànqián éryǐ.
Yeah! They make begging into a job. It's not because they don't have the ability to work; they just take advantage of the sympathy of others to make money.
Then why don't they get a job? Stooping to ask people for money: could there be anything more degrading?
hàochīlǎnzuò bēi. zhǐyào ná ge wǎn jiù néng lái qián, duō qīngsōng a!
It's money for nothing! As long as you have a bowl, then you can make money. It's so easy!
ò! ái, yǒushíhou wǒ yě kàndào yǒu xiǎo háizi hé lǎorén zài qǐtǎo, tāmen zǒng bùhuì piànrén ba.
Oh! Well, sometimes I also see some kids and old people begging. They can't be faking it.
zhè jiùyào kàn qíngkuàng le. yǒuyīxiē xiǎo háizi qíshí shì bèi dàren kòngzhì le, cái chūlai qǐtǎo de. yǒuyīcì, dìtiě lǐ yī gè nánrén dài zhe yī gè háizi qǐtǎo, dàjiā dōu yǐwéi háizi shì bèi guǎimài de, hái bàojǐng le ne. jiéguǒ, nàge nánrén hái zhēnde shì háizi de bàba. bùguò yǒuyīxiē cánjírén kěnéng zhēnde xūyào bāngzhù.
This depends on the stituation. Some kids are actually being controlled by adults, and made to go out and beg. One time, on the subway a man was carrying a child and begging. Everyone thought that the child had been abducted and reported it to the police. It turned out that the man was really the child's father. However, handicapped people could really be in need of help.
So how can I tell if they really need help or not?
zhè ge ma, wǒ juéde nǐ kěyǐ kàn kan tā xūyào shénme. bǐrú, nǐ kěyǐ gěi tāmen yī gè miànbāo. yībān zhíyè qǐgài gēnběn bù yào zhèxiē dōngxi, tāmen yǒudeshì qián kěyǐ mǎi hǎochī de. zǒngzhī, jǐnliàng bù yào gěi qián. tèbié shì xiàng nǐ zhèyàng de wàiguórén, jīngcháng bù míngbai qíngkuàng, róngyì chéngwéi tāmen de mùbiāo. wǒ tīngshuō, háiyǒu qǐgài zhuānmén shǒu zài jiǔbā ménkǒu, děng nǐ hēzuì le zǒu chūlái, wèn nǐ yàoqián ne.
Yeah, I think you can look at what they need. For example, you can give them a piece of bread. Most professional beggars don't want these kinds of things; they've got money to buy something good to eat. In short, try not to give money. Especially for foreigners like you, who often don't understand the situation, it's easy to become a target. I've heard some beggars specialize in hanging around the doors of bars, waiting for you to come out drunk and asking you for money.
Yeah, I know. Whoa! Why isn't there any money in my wallet?
ǎ, bùhuì bèi tōu le ba?
What? It wasn't stolen, was it?
āyā! wǒ xiǎngqǐlai le, zuótiān wǒ qù le jiǔbā......
Oh, no! I remember! Yesterday I went to a bar...
