Upper-Intermediate - Table Manners in the West (D1983)

Xiǎo Měi, nǐ wǎnshang xiǎng chī shénme? wǒ qǐng nǐ chīfàn, tì nǐ jiēfēngxǐchén.
Xiao Mei, what do you want to eat tonight? I’ll treat you since you’ve come all this way to visit.
Now that I’m in America I want to try out some local Western food, of course.
hǎo a, jiù xīcān le.
OK. Western food it is.
bùguò, wǒ yǒudiǎnr pà pà de. chī xīcān shìbushì yǒu hěn duō jiǎngjiu a? wǒ pà dào shíhou huì chūyángxiàng, diū liǎn diū dào nǐmen Měiguó lái le.
But I’m a bit worried. Aren’t there a lot of things to think about when you eat Western food? I’m nervous that when the time comes I’ll make a spectacle of myself and lose tons of face.
méi nàme kuāzhāng. zhǐyào shāowēi zhùyì yīxià jiùhǎole.
It’s not that bad. As long as you pay attention to a few little things you’ll be fine.
yàobu nǐ xiān gēn wǒ shuō yīxià chī xīcān de lǐyí ba. wǒ kě bù xiǎng bèi bǐshì.
How about you go over Western table manners first. I really don't want to embarrass myself.
yībān xīcāntīng dōu bǐjiào ānjìng, suǒyǐ bù yào dàshēng de shuōhuà, yě bù yào yīzhí shuō, shuō gè bùtíng, zhèyàng huì yǐngxiǎng dào línzhuō de kèrén.
In general, Western restaurants are relatively quiet. You shouldn't speak too loudly or talk incessantly because it'll disturb the neighboring tables.
nà wǒ jiù jǐnliàng bù shuō, máitóu chīfàn hǎo le.
Then I'll do my best to not speak and just focus on eating.
A: 也行。
yě xíng. bùguò, chīfàn de shíhou bù yào bǎ zuǐbā zhāng de hěn dà. háiyǒu, jǔjué shíwù de shíhou bù yào fāchū hěn ěxīn de bājībājī de shēngyīn, nàyàng huì xiǎnde hěn méi jiàoyǎng.
That'll work. However, when you eat you shouldn't open your mouth too wide. Also, when you chew your food you shouldn't make really disgusting chewing and chomping noises; it makes you look like you weren't raised well.
ò, nà wǒ jiù xuéxí zuò gè shūnǚ ba. duìle, wǒ zhèyàng qù kěyǐ ma? xū bu xūyào huàn tiáo shūnǚ diǎnr de qúnzi?
Oh. Then I'll just learn how to act like a lady. That's right, can I go out like this? Do I need to change into a more ladylike skirt?
T xù kěyǐ, jiājiǎotuō zuì hǎo bù yào chuān, yǒudiǎnr lāta.
A T-shirt is fine. It's best if you don't wear flip-flops as they look a little sloppy.
hǎo de. háiyǒu, wǒ lǎo shì gǎo bu qīngchu nǎ zhī shǒu ná dāo, nǎ zhī shǒu ná chā?
OK. Also, I can never remember which hand I should use to hold the knife and which hand I should use to hold the fork.
zhè ge wúsuǒwèi, zěnme fāngbiàn zěnme ná.
That doesn't matter. Just use whichever one is comfortable.
Really? That's great! Can I put the napkin wherever I want, too?
cānbù yào fàng zài tuǐ shàng, rúguǒ yào cā zuǐbā, jiù zhèyàng, ná qǐlái cā yīxià, ránhòu zài fàng huíqu.
You should put your napkin on your lap. If you need to wipe your mouth, you just pick up your napkin like this, wipe your mouth, then put it back.
hǎo de. háiyǒu shénme yào zhùyì de ma?
OK. Is there anything else I should pay attention to?
háiyǒu yīdiǎn, chīfàn de shíhou yào zuò zhí tǐngxiōng, bù yào bǎ gēbo zhǒu fàng zài zhuō shàng.
There's one other point. When you're eating you should sit up straight and not put your elbows on the table.
bù bǎ gēbo zhǒu fàng zài zhuō shàng zěnme chī?
How do you eat if you can't put your elbows on the table?
kěyǐ a, wǒ mófǎng gěi nǐ kàn, xiàng zhèyàng, mànmàn de, qīngqīng de!
You can do it. I'll demonstrate for you. Like this. Slowly and gently!
wā, gāo nándù dòngzuò, nǐmen chī ge fàn kě zhēn lèi a!
Wow, that's a really tough motion. It's so much work for you guys to eat a meal!
