Upper-Intermediate - Driving in China (D1818)

A: 迈克,早!
Màikè, zǎo!
Good morning, Mike!
Good morning! Agh, line two was malfunctioning again today. There were no trains for ages.
A: 是吗?
shìma? zuìjìn dìtiě zěnme lǎo chū wèntí? tài bù ānquán le! wǒ quàn nǐ, háishì qù mǎi liàng chē, zìjǐ kāichē shàngbān ba.
Really? Why has the subway been having so many problems recently? It’s so unsafe! I’m telling you, you should just go buy a car and drive to work yourself.
zìjǐ kāichē? háishì suàn le ba. xiànzài mǎlù shāshǒu zhème duō, wǒ kě bùgǎn ná zìjǐ de xìngmìng kāi wánxiào.
Drive myself? Forget about it. There are so many reckless drivers on the road right now. I don’t want to mess around with my life.
hāhā, méixiǎngdào nǐ zhème dǎnxiǎo. ànlǐshuō, nǐmen wàiguórén kěshì kāichē zhǎngdà de. wǒmen Zhōngguórén hái zài qí zìxíngchē de shíhou, nǐmen jiù huì kāichē la. lùn chējì, lùn jīngyàn, yīnggāi bǐ wǒmen qiáng duō le.
Ha ha, I had no idea you were such a coward. Normally, you foreigners drive cars growing up. While we Chinese are riding bicycles, you're driving. You should have a lot more experience and be a lot more skilled at driving than us.
chējì zàihǎo yǒu shénme yòng? rúguǒ yùdào bù dǒng guīzé de duìshǒu, háishì yīdiǎnr bànfǎ dōu méiyǒu a. shénme chāduì la, zhuǎnwān bù dǎdēng la, tūrán lái ge jíshāchē la shénme de, zhèxiē wēixiǎn xìng dòngzuò dōu yǐjīng shì jiāchángbiànfàn le.
What good does being a good driver do me? If I encounter someone who doesn’t understand the rules, it doesn’t help me at all. Cutting in line, turning without using their turn signal, suddenly slamming on the brakes, and so on; these dangerous things happen all the time.
A: 这倒是。
zhèdàoshì. wǒ gāng shànglù nà huìr5 jīngcháng bèi xiàde zhí mào lěnghàn. shàng le gāojià pà zhuīwěi, xià le gāojià pà zhuàngrén. yǒuxiērén guò mǎlù gēnběn bù kàn yǒu méiyǒu bānmǎxiàn, yě bù guānxīn hónglǜdēng, xiǎng guò jiù guò. wǒ yǒu yīcì jiù chàdiǎnr zhuàngdào le yī ge lǎorén, hài de wǒ yī ge xīngqī dōu bùgǎn mō fāngxiàngpán.
That is true. When I first started driving I would often get so freaked out I would break out in a cold sweat. When I got on the elevated road I would worry about getting rear-ended, and when I got off I would worry I was going to hit someone. Some people don’t even look to see if there's a crosswalk when they cross the street and don't pay attention to traffic lights; if they want to cross, they just cross. I nearly hit an elderly person once. I was so scared that I couldn’t even touch a steering wheel for a week.
suǒyǐ a, wǒ nìngyuàn jǐ dìtiě huò zhě dǎdī. zài Zhōngguó kāichē jiù xiàng kàn jīngxiǎnpiānr yīyàng jǐnzhāng, wǒ de xīnzàng kě chéngshòubu qǐ.
Therefore, I’d rather squeeze onto the subway or take a cab. Driving in China is as nerve-wracking as watching a thriller movie. My heart really can’t take it.
āi! yě shì. yàoshì zài yùdào ge pèngcí de, nà zhēn shì yǒulǐ yě shuōbuqīng le.
Agh! Me too. If I were to encounter someone who faked getting hit when they really weren't, it'd be impossible to reason with them.
